BMW: Sustainable production with green hydrogen

BMW is focusing on green hydrogen to make production at the Leipzig plant sustainable and economical. The paint shop already uses bivalent burners that can be operated with both natural gas and hydrogen. This changeover requires only minimal adjustments and can take place during ongoing operations. BMW also operates the world’s first fully automatic hydrogen filling station for internal transport trains and is planning to build its own hydrogen pipeline in order to work towards CO2-neutral production in the long term.

In addition to the switch to hydrogen in the paint facility, BMW is also promoting the use of renewable energies for the plant’s power supply. The Leipzig plant is also planning to build its own hydrogen pipeline to ensure security of supply and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. These measures are part of BMW’s long-term strategy to reduce CO2 emissions to zero by 2050. By integrating hydrogen and other green technologies, BMW aims to further improve the sustainability and competitiveness of its production.
