Bavaria’s Largest Electrolysis Plant in Wunsiedel
The WUN H2 GmbH was founded in 2021 as a joint venture by Rießner-Gase GmbH, Siemens Project Ventures GmbH and Stadtwerke Wunsiedel. The company plans, builds, and operates hydrogen production facilities. The electrolysis plant in Wunsiedel was inaugurated in September 2022 and has an electrical capacity of 8.75 MW.
At peak capacity, it produces approximately 175 kilograms of hydrogen per hour. This enables an annual production of up to 1,350 metric tons of hydrogen from renewable electricity. According to the operator, the hydrogen produced has a purity of up to 99 percent. Compressed to up to 500 bar, it is then stored in tanks on site.
At the plant, water is split into hydrogen and oxygen via PEM electrolysis using electricity generated by solar and wind power plants. The hydrogen is then compressed. The PEM hydrogen production plant thus converts the available renewable energy into a storable medium and makes it available for various applications in mobility and industry. In this way, the project links electricity generation, hydrogen production, and regional consumption.
