Krummhörn: Uniper’s pioneering project for hydrogen storage

With the Hydrogen Pilot Cavern (HPC) Krummhörn project, Uniper is driving forward research into the large-scale storage of green hydrogen. A specially developed salt cavern is being used to test how hydrogen can be stored safely and efficiently in order to further expand the hydrogen infrastructure in Germany.

The facility has been in trial operation since September 2024 in order to gain fundamental insights into the safety, quality and stability of hydrogen storage through various storage cycles.

In the future, the site is to be expanded and reach a capacity of up to 600 GWh by 2030. The state of Lower Saxony is supporting the project with 2.375 million euros. HPC is part of Uniper’s Greener Gases strategy.
