Hydrogen pioneer: the coastal power plant in Kiel

The Kiel coastal power plant, operated by Stadtwerke Kiel, is a modern gas-engine CHP plant that has been in operation since the end of 2019. With an electrical output of 190 MW and a thermal output of 192 MW, it ensures the supply of electricity and heat for over 73,500 households in the Kiel region. Thanks to the combined heat and power generation, the power plant achieves an overall utilization rate of over 90 %, making it one of the most efficient power plants in Europe.

An important aspect of the planned future development of the coastal power plant is the planned conversion to green hydrogen operation by 2035 at the latest. This will make the power plant a world-leading example of climate-neutral energy generation. The green hydrogen is to be produced on site in its own electrolysis plant and supplied via a planned pipeline. This conversion to hydrogen operation underlines Stadtwerke Kiel’s commitment to making a significant contribution to the energy transition and reducing CO2 emissions.
