Energy Park Bad Lauchstädt: Green hydrogen from Central Germany

The Bad Lauchstädt Energy Park innovation project is testing the intelligent production of green hydrogen from wind power as well as its storage, transportation, marketing and use on an industrial scale in central Germany. The energy park thus represents Germany’s first complete H2 value chain in a closed cycle and is making a significant contribution to researching the future technology of green hydrogen and bringing it to market maturity.

The eight wind turbines went into operation in September 2024, and the topping-out ceremony for the electrolysis building took place in March 2024. The installation of Sunfire’s 30 MW large-scale electrolysis system is scheduled for completion at the end of 2025. The hydrogen produced at the plant will initially be supplied to users in the chemical industry. The first official customer is the TotalEnergies refinery in Leuna, central Germany. The partners in the project include Terrawatt Planungsgesellschaft mbH, Uniper, VNG Handel und Vertrieb GmbH, VNG Gasspeicher GmbH, ONTRAS Gastransport GmbH, DBI Gastechnologisches Institut gGmbH Freiberg, and VNG AG.
