Energy Park Bad Lauchstädt: Green hydrogen from Central Germany

The Bad Lauchstädt Energy Park will realize the entire value chain of green hydrogen on an industrial scale—from its own electricity generation to hydrogen production and transport to hydrogen purchase.

At the heart of the Central German Chemical Triangle, an electrolyzer with up to 30 megawatts (MW) and a 50 MW wind farm are being built to supply energy for hydrogen production. In 2025, the first two of a total of three electrolysis modules were installed at the site. This followed the commissioning of the 25-kilometer transport pipeline a few months earlier – the first section of the hydrogen core network. The transport pipeline connects the Bad Lauchstädt energy park with the Leuna chemical park. TotalEnergies, for example, is the first anchor customer to purchase hydrogen from Bad Lauchstädt.

The project partners include Terrawatt Planungsgesellschaft mbH, Uniper, VNG Handel und Vertrieb GmbH, VNG Gasspeicher GmbH, ONTRAS Gastransport GmbH, DBI Gastechnologisches Institut gGmbH Freiberg, and VNG AG.
