OMV Announces Investment in Large 140 Megawatt Green Hydrogen Plant
OMV officially opened the new ReOil and electrolyzer plants at the Schwechat refinery near Vienna. The new 10 MW electrolysis plant has a production capacity of up to 1,500 tons of green hydrogen per year and is the largest of its kind in Austria. Together with ReOil, the pioneering technology was the focus of the OMV event “From Innovation to Impact: Forward for Good”.
In addition, OMV has made the final decision to invest a mid three-digit million euro amount in a new green hydrogen plant in Bruck an der Leitha, Lower Austria. OMV plans to build a 140 MW electrolysis plant there – subject to and assuming a positive funding commitment from the European and Austrian Hydrogen Banks. With an annual production capacity of up to 23,000 tons of green hydrogen, the new plant will be one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The project, which is expected to go into operation at the end of 2027, will benefit from the experience gained with OMV’s 10 MW electrolysis plant. As one of the first green hydrogen production plants in Europe, it has been certified under the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED) as a plant for the production of “renewable fuels of non-biogenic origin” (RFNBO).
“This opening marks a crucial step in our Strategy 2030, driven by OMV’s clear ambition to become an integrated, sustainable chemicals, fuels and energy company – while consistently delivering on our commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Such a systemic change requires collaboration along the entire value chain,” says Alfred Stern, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of OMV. “Our planned 140 MW electrolysis plant in Bruck an der Leitha will cover a significant part of the hydrogen demand of the OMV refinery in Schwechat and further strengthen our role as a pioneer of industrial transformation,” adds Martijn van Koten, OMV Executive Vice President.
