Gascade Fills First Pipeline with Hydrogen

GASCADE Gastransport GmbH has reached an important milestone in the energy transition: the first filling of a pipeline section with hydrogen as part of the Flow – making hydrogen happen program has been successfully launched. This ambitious project marks a decisive step towards converting the existing natural gas infrastructure to climate-friendly hydrogen. By the end of 2025, a total of around 400 kilometers of pipeline with a diameter of 1.4 meters will be ready for the transport of hydrogen – an internationally unique measure.

With Flow – making hydrogen happen, an essential part of a north-south hydrogen axis is being created to ensure a secure and efficient supply in the long term. “With this conversion, we are not only demonstrating our technological expertise, but also sending a strong signal for the hydrogen economy. We are already creating planning security for companies along the entire value chain,” explains GASCADE Managing Director Christoph von dem Bussche.

Ulrich Benterbusch, also Managing Director of GASCADE, also emphasizes the strategic importance of the project: “Our aim is to make existing infrastructure usable for hydrogen quickly and cost-effectively. Flow lays the foundation for a sustainable energy supply and supports the market ramp-up of this climate-friendly technology.”

With the initial filling, GASCADE is not only making energy history, but is also making an important contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions and promoting renewable energies. The use of existing pipelines for hydrogen avoids resource-intensive new buildings and accelerates the transition to a climate-friendly energy supply.

“Our vision is a sustainable future with hydrogen as the central energy carrier. With Flow, we are setting a new industry standard and proving that the energy transition is achievable with concrete measures,” adds program manager Dirk Flandrich. “I would like to thank everyone involved for their great commitment and contribution to this pioneering project.”
