BMZ Invests 30 Million Euros in Hydrogen Project in Morocco
The PtX Development Fund initiated by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has agreed a start-up investment in Morocco for the development of green hydrogen production and the conversion of fertilizer production to renewable energies. The aim is to build up industrial production capacities for green hydrogen and downstream products such as ammonia and to make food production more climate-friendly and less dependent on imported fossil fertilizers.
The partnership with Morocco includes the construction of a production plant for green hydrogen in the Jorf industrial zone, around 100 kilometers south of Casablanca. The PtX Development Fund is supporting the project with a grant of 30 million euros to the project development company Hydrojeel of the Moroccan OCP Group. The plant will be powered by wind and solar energy and is expected to produce up to 100,000 tons of green ammonia per year by the end of 2026, saving around 300,000 tons of CO₂. In the long term, capacity is set to increase to three million tons.
State Secretary for Development Jochen Flasbarth emphasizes the importance of the investment: “The PtX development fund enables Morocco to start producing green hydrogen and sustainable downstream products. This is an important step towards a climate-friendly industry and stable supply relationships.”
The project is part of the German-Moroccan Alliance for Climate and Energy. In addition to Morocco, Germany is also supporting Brazil, South Africa, Tunisia and Algeria in developing a hydrogen economy. The BMZ is promoting this development by providing advice, improving the economic framework conditions and establishing local value chains.
The PtX Development Fund provides targeted financing for innovative hydrogen projects that would otherwise be difficult to implement on the market. The aim is to ensure that developing countries benefit from the new green hydrogen economy in the long term. The first investment for an Egyptian hydrogen project was signed at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference in fall 2024.
