The German Business Alliance for Clean Energy

Hydrogen Germany

The hydrogen age is now: The energy carrier is a crucial element for a climate-neutral and resilient energy system. The political and technical course has been set. Now is the time to fill the grid with hydrogen at a new pace. We are committed to this. We are Germany’s business alliance for clean energy.

Land of Hydrogen

  • Renewable energies will account for a large part of electricity production in the coming years and form the basis for a climate-neutral energy supply.

    • 155 GW

Installed capacity for wind and solar in 2024

    • 80 %

Share of renewables in gross electricity consumption by 2030

  • Gas infrastructure plays a decisive role in the energy system of the future: it is H2-ready, creates the conditions for global energy imports and increases the resilience of the overall system.

    • 330000 mi

of gas network and 47 underground gas storage facilities form a comprehensive energy system for molecules.

    • 96 %

of gas pipelines are already suitable for conversion to hydrogen in terms of materials.

  • The increasing availability of renewable energy and a globally unique energy infrastructure make Germany an attractive location for forward-looking investments in the field of hydrogen.

    • 10 GW

      Electrolysis capacity by 2030

    • 6000 mi

      Hydrogen core network by 2037

  • Refineries, steel mills, power plants, trucks: For many industrial customers, hydrogen is the path to climate neutrality.

    • 278 TWh

Gas consumption in industry in 2023

    • 95-130 TWh

      Hydrogen demand 2030

Mission

The start of the hydrogen age has been successful.

The hydrogen backbone network is emerging, projects on an industrial scale are being realized, and international trade relationships are being developed. Germany leads globally in the development of hydrogen technologies on an industrial scale: Our companies have solutions for all components of the hydrogen economy.

Maintain the high speed.

The foundation for Germany as a hydrogen country has been laid. The pace of ramping up the key technology of the future must be maintained. To achieve this, companies, the state and society are pulling together. We now need investments in hydrogen production in order to utilize the infrastructure and thus drive forward the decarbonization of the economy.

The hydrogen ramp-up is coming.

The development towards hydrogen is irreversible. German companies are active worldwide in the production, trading and transportation of the energy carrier and are developing net-zero solutions based on hydrogen. Technological leadership in this area makes our industrial location fit for the future and creates advantages in global competition.

Task

We emphasize the strength of the hydrogen economy and the opportunities for Germany as a hydrogen country. As an economic alliance, we give the hydrogen value chain a face and demonstrate the power of transformation. We form a joint platform that creates trust in Germany as the land of hydrogen.

    Production

There are different processes for producing hydrogen on an industrial scale. The different production paths for the energy carrier are categorized by colour. It can be imported, but also produced domestically.

    Transportation

The gas infrastructure offers enormous import, transport and storage possibilities for hydrogen. Germany is also an energy transit country and the central hub in the European gas and hydrogen network.
